St. Mary's Episcopal Church

This collection contains images that document the history of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church at 13th and Holmes in downtown Kansas City. The church was organized in the River Market area in 1857 under the name Saint Luke’s Mission. The name was changed in 1879 to Saint Mary's. The church first moved to 8th and Walnut, before settling in its present location in 1888. Saint Mary's absorbed the congregation of St. George's Episcopal Church in 1989 and images related to the history of that church are included. Since its beginning, Saint Mary's has had a significant role within the Kansas City community and within the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri.
