Beginning of American Royal | Book Section | "Perhaps you would be interested in knowing how this great show came into being. As early as 1880 pure-bred Angus, Shorthorn, Gallaway, and Hereford cattle were being brought into the Central West and Southwest. By 1883 strong rivalry existed between the breeders of this section as to the relative merits of the different breeds. At first, it was known as the Kansas City Fat Stock Show Association. Their first show was held in 1882 in River View Park. In reporting a meeting of the four cattle breeders associations, in August 1901, the Drovers Telegram used the heading, 'The American Royal Is Coming.' Thus was christened what was destined to be one of the most far-reaching events in the Middle West." |
