Emporia, Kansas, celebrated the nation's first Veterans Day in 1953. Due to the efforts of Emporia resident Al King and another Kansan, the then President Eisenhower, what used to be Armistice Day, held in honor of World War I veterans, was renamed in 1954 Veterans Day in honor of all veterans.
