Note(s)
To add to the Germans' resentment, Anglo-Americans in the area often expressed their contempt of the Germans for several generations to come. Notable in this reagard was John N. Edwards, long-time resident of Lafayette County and postwar editor of the Kansas City Times. In a book about local Confederate hero, JO Shelby, published in 1867, Edwards presented a quite negative stereotype of the Dutchman"-lying, nefarious, bragging and rather simple-minded."
