Even though he had invented the light bulb in 1879, Thomas Edison hadn't yet developed all the necessary equipment to generate electricity for multiple sites from a central source. Thanks to 25-year-old Edwin Weeks, Kansas City was one of the first cities in the country to do that, turning on the lights commercially for 11 merchants, a druggist and a saloonkeeper. The date was May 13, 1882.
