In this article, the author examines patterns of slave holding and agricultural production in the counties defined as "Little Dixie": Howard, Saline, Lafayette, Boone, Clay and Cooper. The Civil War, emancipation, and the arrival of new immigrants from the northeast caused a move toward production of grains, cttle and hogs.
