Note(s)
The reverse side reads: Planes Leave a Cloudy Trail. This unusual photograph taken at the Naval Air Station, Olathe, Kans., shows a vapor trail at a height of 20,000 feet left by two B-24's. Only rarely are atmospheric conditions such that this vapor, resembling a Cirrus cloud, becomes distinct. Temperatures of Zero or colder, with a very moist atmosphere, are necessary. Air is condensed by the plane's passage and crystals are formed. It is the reflection of light on these crystals that gives the man-made cloud effect. Shown in the foreground is the Administration Building at the Air Station. Official U.S. Navy Photograph.
