This article includes the story written by Mattie Bradshaw entitled "My Grandmother's Story". This appeared in 1907 in the "State Normal Bulletin", a publication of the Kansas State Normal School, now Emporia State University. African Americans Lewis and Eliza Bradshaw emigrated from Kentucky to Hodgeman County, Kansas, in April, 1879, joining other exodusters.
