Description
Analysis of Pierre Laclede's activities between 1763 and 1766 as he set off west across the Mississippi River to trade with Native Americans in present-day Missouri. Due primarily to his description in Auguste Chouteau's journal, Laclede has long been hailed as one of the founders of St. Louis. However, the authors of the article argue that a close examination of lesser-known sources describe Laclede as a failed trader who may not have been as significant in establishing the city as previously believed.
