The first church building to be erected near the junction of the Kaw and the Missouri was the log structure of the Catholics, projected by the missionary-priest, Reverend Benedict Roux (1833-5) and built near the present site of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Eleventh and Washington Streets.
