Note(s)
In 1833 John C. McCoy opened the first store in the settlement that is now Kansas City, Missouri. He, too, penned a record of his experiences as an early merchant, stimulated no doubt by the rapid growth of Kansas City during his lifetime. Otherwise, the mercantile group in the West seems to have remained silent about their experiences, while men in other areas of public life recorded biographical material.
