Pages 30-31: "For One-Eled Ellis the developments brought a gain in public notice. As early as 1855 the word 'City' was commonly added to the word 'Kansas' as the name of the place. The fact that One-Eyed Ellis seventeen years earlier had served as chairman of the founders' meeting was frequently recalled. One of the founders remarked concerning the Ellis chairmanship: 'It was his only claim to celebrity, too, except that he sold remarkably bad whisky to the Indians.'"
