This essay discusses the origin of the term "Jayhawker", used early in Kansas Territory history. Included also is the use of the word during the Border Warfare period and mentioning such figures as John Brown, James Montgomery, Charles Jennison, James Lane, etc. The essay concludes with the meaning and purpose of the Jayhawk symbol at the University of Kansas.
