The stylishly dressed couple pictured are ready for the Thanksgiving, 1904, football game between Missouri and Kansas universities. The gentleman wears a derby hat and chrysanthemum boutonniere with long ribbon streamers and carries a pennant, while the lady, in Gibson girl hat and fluffy jabot, holds three long-stemmed chrysanthemums in her hand. The flowers were almost a necessity for a Thanksgiving day football game in the early part of the century. To accommodate the big crowds, Thanksgiving day football games between these rival universities were held annually in Kansas City at the old Association Ball Park, 20th and Prospect. The large stadiums at Lawrence and Columbia had not yet been built. Old records show the score that day was 29 to 0 in favor of Kansas. The post card was copyrighted in 1904 by P. F. Volland. Kansas City Times, November 17, 1973.
