biographical/historical
Huge stone pillars with a flower garden in front framed the entrance to Janssen Place, built before the turn of the century. On 36th between Cherry and Kenwood, it was the most attractive residential development in the Kansas City-Westport area. The district was planned by Arthur E. Stillwell, who from his front porch at 620 E. 36th could look south into a beautiful woodland. Although Stilwell was committed to the financing of modest homes, he visualized a residential area for the more affluent, so he purchased the lots south of 36th facing Cherry and Kenwood and two small farms and part of another at the south end of the district. He then employed George Matthews, an architect, to lay out the plan for the area. It was modeled after the Van Deventer Place in St. Louis, which Stilwell had visited and admired. On March 3, 1897, Stilwell and three associates filed the plat of Janssen Place, named for his Dutch friend and business associate, August Janssen. Today, after nearly 80 years, Janssen Place remains one of the most beautiful developments in Kansas City. Kansas City Star, March 22, 1975.
