biographical/historical
The Colonnade on the Paseo between 10th and 11th was built at the close of the 19th century. August R. Meyer, German-born nature enthusiast who gained his wealth from mining and smelting interests in Colorado before coming to Kansas City, was the president of Kansas City's first Board of Park Commissioners at the time. He served from 1892 to 1901. Work began on the Paseo from 9th to 11th streets in 1898. The Colonnade was erected a year later. George W. Goodlander was the contractor. Sturdy vine trunks entwine the columns in the picture. The heavy foliage covered the beams and lattice work on the roof, allowing the sunshine to filter through. Today the old structure still stands. Old vines are gone, but wisteria has been planted which one day may encircle the graceful Doric columns. The card was published in color about 1908 by the Acmegraph Company of Chicago. Kansas City Times. August 5, 1983
