The portrait was separated from the original mat board. It is believed that most if not all of Anna Stacey's drawings were made from photographs. Clell Miller served under William Anderson during the Civil War. Following the war, Miller was one of the principals in the James-Younger gang robberies. He was killed in Northfield, Minnesota, during a bank robbery on September 7, 1876.
