Two men and a waiting horse-drawn cab are seen in front of Thomas W. Johnson's saloon, in the left foreground of this 1909 scene of the 300 block on East twelfth street. The saloon's site and the remainder of the block are now occupied by the 11-story Library building. Traffic, which this week became one way eastbound, traveled then in both directions. Drivers were not greatly concerned about keeping to the right; buggies and motor cars in the picture are parked facing both ways on both sides of the street. The picture looks west and the Baltimore hotel is seen on the right of the street in the distance. The occasion for hanging the signs 300 at each end of the block seems to have been forgotten. Kansas City Star, June 29, 1968.
