On August 30, 1854, John Harris purchased from Louis Vogel the remainder of lot 1, removed the old tavern, and soon afterward (1854 or 1855) built the three-story brick Harris House, which for many years figured so conspicuously in the history of Westport. Mr. Harris retired from the management of the hotel in 1864.
