Chapter discusses the history of the university. Founded by Presbyterian minister Reverend Eben Blachly (1800-1877) for refugee children from Missouri in the late 1850s to 1860s, the school began as "the Blachly school" in Quindaro, Kansas. It changed into the private Freedman's University for black people, and by 1911, the public Western University for Negroes, later defunct. Includes photo of John Brown statue.
