Note(s)
Gilpin purchased a large tract of land between the town of Independence and the Missouri river, and laid out Gilpintown. He had unbounded faith in the future of the country. In the Kansas City Public Library there is preserved a map drawn by him showing the future city, under the name of Centropolis, extending from Independence to the Kansas river.
