Description
Comprehensive article about the need for a more "organic" approach to urban planning in Kansas City, based on "things that people actually do in this town, instead of the 'build it and they will come,' approach that we've relied on for years." Discussion on reasons for the failure and marginal success of redevelopment projects by the Civic Council, et al, such as the Power and Light District, Science City at Union Station, and the 18th and Vine District. Suggestions for more practical projects, especially for Downtown, such as further increase in housing through old building renovations into lofts, shopping stores and restaurants, neighborhood trails and motion pictures, sports events, etc.

Page 20: "It's time to look at ourselves. It's time for the little guys like you and me to start calling the shots when it comes to economic development; because the more the 'experts' are in charge, the more under-used facilities we'll have to pay to maintain." Page 22: "We just need to let Kansas City be Kansas City. Face it, [sic] we're never going to be a New York or a Los Angeles (who'd want to be?). Travelers are always going to be more interested in the seashore or the mountains. But most of the people I know who have recently moved here from 'the coasts' find something in Kansas City that charms them--a slower pace, lots of trees, a friendly nod from a stranger on the sidewalk and room to move around."
