Article about the preservation of architecturally significant buildings on the Saint Louis riverfront area, the oldest of which was mostly destroyed by the 1849 fire. Description of the compromises in urban planning in the area, leading to some demolitions but also the construction of the Arch, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948 and built in 1963 as a memorial to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase by former President Thomas Jefferson, with photos and illustrations.
