Description
The slave population in Missouri increased from 3,011 in 1810 to 114,931 in 1860. As a neighboring state, Kansas provided an escape route for slaves including its Underground Railroad connections. During the Civil War as Union troops occupied much of the state of Missouri and as Kansas became a free state, more opportunities arose for escape. Article also discusses the role of Jim Lane, known as the Grim Chieftain.
