These cases "provide useful insights concerning race relations, slave legal rights and the importance of those matters in shaping the political climate in antebellum slave states and territories". This article explores the case of the offspring of Marie Jean Scypion, a St. Louis slave of mixed ancestry including Indian blood. Includes the Chouteau family involvement in the case.
