Article profiles author Helen Hunt Jackson and her inspiration, Bright Eyes (Susette) La Flesche. Jackson was captivated by Bright Eyes' 1879 speaking appearances in Boston, and went on to write Century of Dishonor (MVSC 970.5 J13) to expose the "national shame" of America's treatment of Indians, as well as the novel Ramona, which she hoped would serve as a Native American Uncle Tom's Cabin in terms of raising awareness of the plight of suffering people.
