Description
The author of this article presents what information can be determined concerning Annie Harris McKeene, a shadowy figure of the border warfare and local guerrilla activity. Supposedly she was born in Jackson County, Missouri, in 1845. Her parents were later Confederate sympathizers. She met John McKeene when Quantrill and his gang stopped at her parents home for food. They later married and rode together with the local guerrillas. John was killed by Union forces and supposedly Annie later joined the Sisters of Mercy and became Sister Celeste. This story was published in the Kansas City Globe in 1890, but the facts have been difficult to actually prove.
