Description
The author, John J. Lutz, listed as a Methodist Church pastor, retells the Morgan Walker tragedy as he understands it. This conflict occurred in Jackson County, Missouri in 1860 and involved William Quantrill and the liberation of slaves in the area by a Kansas party of Quaker men. "The Morgan Walker plantation was three miles northeast of Blue Springs and six miles southeast of Independence. Mr. Walker settled there in 1834, and died in 1867. His plantation consisted of 1900 acres, cultivated by the labor of twenty-six negro slaves." The article includes Albert Southwick's narrative, he was left a mile from the plantation guarding the team which brought the party from Kansas. The men killed are identified as Charles Ball, Chalkley T. Lipsey, and Edwin S. Morrison.
