Description
Inside front cover of magazine features a picture of the Pawnee Rock Monument dated June 6, 1914. This Santa Fe Trail landmark is located by the town of Pawnee Rock in central Kansas. The monument shown was erected in 1912. The site is a state historic site now and the top of the monument has since been lost. Concerning the site, "travelers and traders used it as a campground and landmark, signaling as it did the halfway point in their long and often arduous journey to or from Santa Fe". It became covered with names as people would carve on the rock.
