Description
Zebulon Pike's Southwest Expedition is explored in this article in Kansas History, part of the magazine's celebration of the 200th anniversary of the expedition. Pike's travels grew out of the Louisiana Purchase and according to the article, "their journey provided as much impetus for westward expansion as the Lewis and Clark Expedition" mainly because Pike encountered the Spanish which Lewis and Clark eluded. The author also names Pike the grandfather of the Santa Fe Trail because of his exchange with the Spanish. Pike's other travels are explored as well as the details of his Southwest Expedition in 1806-07. Pike died leading troops into battle against the British in 1813.
