Description
The new game of golf was one reason Oakwood Country Club, then known as the Progress Club, moved from downtown to its current location, a then-rural property at 9800 Grandview Road, in 1911. When the course opened in 1912, there were just three other private courses in the area, plus public courses at Swope Park and Exelsior Springs, available to golfers. Oakwood Country Club celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The club was established in 1881 by some Reform Jewish families from Congregation B'nai Jehudah. Today the club has around 500 members, both Jews and non-Jews.
