The agitation in Congress resulted in the passage of an act allowing those whose lands had been destroyed by the earthquake to locate the same quantity of land in any other part of the public domain open to entry. ..Five hundred and sixteen certificates were issued, but only 20 were located by the original claimants in person; most of the remainder were acquired by speculators in St. Louis. Perjury and forgery became so common that for a time a New Madrid claim was regarded as a synonym for fraud.
