Portrait and biographical sketch of Nehemiah Holmes (1826-1873), "called the father of the street railroads of Kansas City," born in New York and coming to Kansas City in 1856 as an engineer, realtor, and banker, "project[ing] the Kansas City & Westport horse railroad and also the Jackson county road to the state line" between 1868 and his death in 1873. "He [Holmes] was at the time of his death and had been for many years president of the Mechanics' Bank and was also engaged in the insurance business" (p. 85).
