Description
This study views populism from the eyes of the Negro community. "For two reasons its focus is Kansas. First and most important, a large number of newspapers controlled and edited by Negroes served the Negro population of Kansas. Second, Kansas was free of the confusion inherent in the coalition politics of the South." Whites and African Americans joined the Populist movement in Kansas for different reasons. "The white man was concerned with economics, the Negro with prejujudice and protection from violence." Article traces the path of African Americans into Kansas and the political consequences. The author believes that populism failed as a bi-racial movement " because Negroes and whites did not share a common self-interest".
