Portrait and bio of Edward Hempstead (1770-1817), the first delegate to the national Congress from Missouri from 1812 to 1814, born in Connecticut and "coming to Missouri in 1804, then called Upper Louisiana," first settling in Saint Charles and then moving to Saint Louis, becoming "the first man west of the Mississippi River to hold this office [delegate to Congress]."
