The Missouri General Assembly declared all slaves in Missouri free on January 11, 1865, eleven months before the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution which ended slavery nationwide. To celebrate the Assembly's declaration hundreds of St. Louis blacks gathered in the streets to wave banners and flags.
