Excerpted letters with comments, shedding light on life in Missouri in the 1820s and 1830s and on the character and temperament of a physician, a government official, and military officer William C. Lane. Physician Dr. William C. Lane was the first appointed "aide-de-camp with the rank of colonel" to Missouri's first governor, Alexander McNair, in 1821, and later the first "civil governor of the newly-conquered territory of New Mexico" in 1852.
