Obituary for Fred Curls, a retired appraiser and real estate broker, who died May 15, 2015 at the age of 96. He co-founded Freedom Inc. along with other prominent local African Americans in order to "register more African-American voters and end segregation in politics, public accomodations, and education." Their efforts were almost immediately successful, quickly working to expand the size of the Kansas City Council and electing African-American citizens to public offices. Two of Curls' sons, a daughter-in-law, and one of his granddaughters have served or are currently serving as Kansas City or Missouri-elected officials.
