The origins of [the buffalo soldiers'] nickname remain obscure, although one of the earliest references to it is found in a letter written from Camp Supply, Indian Territory, in June 1872: 'The Indians call them buffalo soldier," because their woolly heads are so much like the matted cushion that is between the horns of buffalo.'"
