Description
Biographical article about Sarah Lucille Turner, or Sarah Turner (1898-1972) of Kansas City, the "first female legislator" in the Missouri state legislature along with Melcene Smith (of Saint Louis) in 1922. Turner was a native of Illinois moving to Kansas City with her family in 1908 and becoming a school reporter at Northeast High School before graduating from the Kansas City School of Law in 1922 and working "in the law offices of Hagerman & Jost" in 1923. She then was elected as a Missouri State Senator in 1924 with the support of Democratic leader Joseph Shannon. Her later career was in journalism in New York, including personnel manager for Newsweek magazine in the 1950s.
