Early in 1866, [James F.] Joy became interested in Kansas City real estate, and through an intermediary, Theodore S. Case, purchased shares in the West Kansas Land Company. This company had been organized in the late fifties in an effort to develop the river-bottom land west of the hills upon which the city was being built.
