Photo and bio of Carrie Westlake Whitney, or Carrie Whitney, "the mother of Kansas City's public library system," dying in 1934. Native of Virginia coming here as head of "the first circulating library in Kansas City at [8th Street] and Main streets in 1881" before promoting the library built in 1889 at 8th and Oak Streets (later razed) and then the 1898 library at 9th and Locust Streets (still standing as of 2001). Also author of a 3-volume history of Kansas City and of children's poetry including lyrics to Christmas music composed by Carl Busch.
