Born in Illinois in 1862 as a maternal grandson of John Deere (the company's founder) and coming to Kansas City in 1892 "assistant manager of the John Deere Plow Company" and "president of the Velie Saddlery Company," with residence at 4500 Warwick Boulevard (built by Velie).
