Biographical sketch of Edward Doherty, "one of Kansas City's self-made men." He was born in Ireland in 1847 and emigrated to Kansas City in 1870, starting in railroad work before engaging "in the retail grocery business at Fourteenth and Wyoming streets with a partner, Frank Gilday," then moving it to 14th and Liberty Streets for 11 years before starting "a saloon at Sixteenth and Wyoming streets" for seven years, retiring as a cigar jobber.
