Appendix A of the book includes a St. Louis Post-Dispatch Interview (1911) with James Milton Turner and includes a short section entitled "How Jesse James Helped J. Milton Turner Maintain His School." Turner was a Missouri-born African American who was a post-Civil War black leader. At one point in his life, he was an early African American educator in Kansas City. The author of the book states concerning the published interview, "Some of what he said is patently false; probably the truth of the bulk of what he said cannot be corroborated."
