Excerpt: "October 23rd. Sunday - The army commenced moving at daylight. Shelby attacked the force in front and drove them into and beyond Westport. The fighting was very severe but he whipped and drove them. In the meantime, however, the strong force from Independence advanced on and struck our rear and came near using up Shelby as he returned from pursuit of Blunt and company, but he cut through and escaped with some loss. It was now evident that the Yankees had doubled teams on us to such an extent to be too strong for us and that to save our large train we must retreat in a southerly direction."
