Description
The author traces the history of horse racing in Riverside, Missouri through a variety of book, newspaper and magazine excerpts on the topic. Early in 20th Century the Riverside area was considered a "horse racing mecca." In 1928, political boss Tom Pendergast and others with gambling interests formed the Riverside Park Jockey Club and operated the Riverside Park racetrack. Anti-gambling forces were able to successfully shut down the track in 1937, and it would later be converted to automobile racing.
