Written by Dr. Brewster Higley in 1870 in Smith County, Kansas, "Home on the Range" became the official state song of Kansas on June 30, 1947. His poem was called "My Western Home" and the words were similar but not identical to the song known today. "The song was picked up by cowboys and settlers and spread across the nation in various forms." Article includes the words of the song.
