Griffith, or George Griffith, president of the Merchants' Bank in Douglas County, Kansas, born in Indiana in 1833 and moving to Kansas in 1855 as a businessman and county official, his grocery store in Lawrence "burned out" in Quantrill's raid, and also becoming a state representative and president of the Lawrence Gas, Coke & Coal Company and of the Kansas Basket Manufacturing Company.
