Portrait and biographical sketch of George W. E. Griffith, or George Griffith, president of the Merchants' Bank in Douglas County, Kansas, born in Indiana in 1833 and moving to Kansas in 1855 as a businessman and county official, his grocery store in Lawrence "burned out" in Quantrill's raid, and also becoming a state representative and president of the Lawrence Gas, Coke & Coal Company and of the Kansas Basket Manufacturing Company.
