Biographical article about the family of Boone Hays and his four sons (Samuel Hays, Linville Hays, Amazon Hays, and Upton Hays), all early settlers of the Jackson County area and Western freighters at the beginning of the Santa Fe Trail. Description of Boone Hays as the son of William Hays (himself the son of Daniel Boone's daughter, Susannah Boone), born in Saint Charles, Missouri in the late 1700s and coming to Jackson County around the 1810s, building a plantation near the site of 63rd and Prospect Avenues. Description also of his sons' lives, all involved in trade with the West, including a photo and description of Amazon Hays, "named after the South American river along which his father had hunted."
